We are interested in understanding how new enzymes and metabolic pathways evolve. To decipher evolutionary mechanisms we use experimental and directed evolution, biochemistry, microbiology, and genomics.
Moreover, we implement evolutionary-based approaches to engineer proteins and organisms, aiming at the development of new tools for bioremediation and sustainable agriculture. Specifically, we are developing enzymes and synthetic cells for the depolymerization and assimilation of recalcitrant plastic polymers and organophosphates.
