We study pain pharmacology and ion channel biophysics, with a focus on the pain receptors TRPV1 and TRPA1 and other pain pathway-specific ion channels. We investigate how these channels detect a range of chemical and physical stimuli. My lab has made notable contributions to the field by uncovering the molecular and pharmacological mechanisms underlying TRPV1 modulation by inflammatory mediators and activation by animal toxins. I am also dedicated to developing more effective and selective analgesic drugs based on our recent molecular and pharmacological findings.
